Who’s a Good Candidate for Laser Eye Surgery?
Laser eye surgery is most effective for adults (18+) with a stable prescription and healthy eyes. You may be a good candidate if:
- You have mild to moderate myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism
- Your prescription has remained stable for at least one year
- You have no major eye conditions like dry eye disease or keratoconus
- You’re in overall good health
During your consultation, we’ll help determine whether laser eye surgery is a safe and realistic option for your eyes and vision goals.
What to Expect During Your Consultation
A laser eye surgery consultation at Claresholm Eye Care is more than a routine eye exam. We’ll perform a detailed assessment of your eyes, including:
- Measuring your visual acuity
- Evaluating your corneal thickness
- Measuring your prescription and the shape of your eye
- Assessing your overall eye health
We’ll also walk you through what surgery involves, discuss the risks and benefits, and set realistic expectations, including the fact that while laser surgery often reduces dependency on glasses, it may not eliminate them entirely.
If you choose to proceed, we’ll refer you to a trusted surgical partner and coordinate your pre- and post-operative care.
Types of Laser Eye Surgery
Laser eye surgery isn’t one-size-fits-all. There are several safe, effective procedures that can correct refractive errors and reduce your dependence on glasses or contacts. The right choice for you depends on your eye health, corneal thickness, lifestyle, and visual goals.
During your consultation at Claresholm Eye Care, we’ll assess your eyes thoroughly and discuss which method may be most appropriate. Every option is designed to reshape the cornea so light can focus properly on the retina, improving how clearly you see—without compromising comfort or safety.
The most well-known and widely performed laser eye surgery, LASIK involves creating a thin flap in the cornea’s outer layer. A laser is then used to reshape the underlying corneal tissue, correcting your vision.
Most patients enjoy a quick recovery and noticeable improvement within 24 hours.
PRK was the first type of laser vision correction and remains a trusted option today. Instead of creating a flap, PRK removes the outermost layer of the cornea before reshaping the surface underneath.
The epithelium naturally regenerates as the eye heals. This option may be better suited for patients with thinner corneas or certain occupations or hobbies that make flap-related procedures less ideal.
LASEK combines elements of both LASIK and PRK. The outer corneal layer is loosened and gently moved aside—rather than fully removed or deeply flapped—before the underlying tissue is reshaped.
The epithelium is then replaced and protected with a special bandage contact lens during healing. LASEK is often recommended for patients who need a gentler approach due to corneal shape or thickness.
Your Post-Surgery Care
After your surgery, we’ll monitor your healing through scheduled post-op appointments. These visits allow us to:
- Check that your eyes are healing properly
- Track improvements in your vision
- Answer any questions or concerns you may have
Ongoing care is key to protecting your results. We also recommend continuing with annual comprehensive eye exams to keep your eyes healthy and your vision sharp.
