Diabetic Eyes Need Extra Care & Attention

Diabetes is a systemic condition that can increase your chances of developing a number of serious ocular conditions and diseases. As such, one of the best things you can do to safeguard both your eye health and your vision is to go for annual diabetic eye exams and carefully follow any instructions or recommendations provided by your optometrist.

Diabetic Eye Testing

Diabetes affects your blood sugar levels and increases your chances of developing several serious eye diseases or other ocular conditions, including diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema, cataracts, and glaucoma.

We use only the latest eye care diagnostic, imaging, and testing technology to care for our patients. In fact, we were the second clinic in Alberta to acquire the Zeiss Clarus Retinal Camera, which captures high-resolution images of the back of the retina. Together with our Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), which produces cross-sectional images of the retina, we are able to conduct intensive and precise diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy and other diabetic-related diseases.

Symptoms of Diabetic Eye Disease

Unfortunately, many eye diseases related to diabetes are asymptomatic, meaning you likely won’t experience symptoms until you have already begun to experience permanent vision loss. Fortunately, a diabetic eye exam can catch many of these conditions in their early stages, slowing or even preventing vision loss.

If you ever experience any of the following symptoms, it’s critical that you book an appointment with us as soon as possible:

  • Loss of central vision
  • Blurry or distorted vision
  • Flashes of light in field of vision
  • Inability to see colours
  • Black spots or floaters
