We Put Your Kids First

At Claresholm Eye Care, we want all children to thrive. Your child depends on their vision for more than daily tasks. Undiagnosed or untreated vision problems can hinder your child’s confidence and their ability to learn effectively.

We accept patients of all ages. Our tailored children’s eye exams are specifically designed to evaluate your child’s eye health as well as their vision’s clarity and ensure they have the tools they need to put their best foot forward.

Babies should undergo their first eye exam between the ages of 6 and 9 months old. This first exam will include looking into their eyes and performing some basic tests to evaluate your child’s eye health, focus, and tracking.

Between the ages of 2 and 5, children should undergo a second exam. This visit acts as a follow-up appointment for your child’s first exam. It allows your child’s optometrist to continue to evaluate your child’s eye health and determine if their eyes are focusing and tracking as they should. During this exam, your child’s optometrist will also look for signs of amblyopia (lazy eye) and strabismus (crossed-eyes).

At this age, children can begin to be an active participant in their eye health by recognizing vision problems and voicing any concerns. During your child’s school-aged years, their optometrist will conduct more rigorous testing and check for prescription changes. At this age, we recommend annual eye exams for optimal eye health.

Does My Child Have a Vision Problem?

When our children are young, they often have trouble expressing potential vision problems effectively. Similarly, older children may not understand that their learning ability or lack of concentration may be caused by poor vision. Annual eye exams are vital for helping ensure your child has the visual tools they need to succeed.

Even if you are engaging in the recommended schedule of exams, it is vital to watch for signs of trouble, such as:

  • Short attention span
  • Headaches
  • Frequent blinking
  • Squinting
  • Avoiding reading
  • Tilting the head to one side
  • Losing their place often while reading
  • Poor reading comprehension

If you notice your child exhibiting one or more of the above behaviours you should book an appointment with their optometrist as soon as possible.
