What is Myopia?

Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, is a common refractive error that affects distance vision. Myopia is becoming more common, and currently affects over 30% of the Canadian population.

Myopia can affect more than just distance vision—it can have long-term implications for your child’s overall eye health. By managing myopia early, we can help slow its progression and reduce their future reliance on glasses or contact lenses.

At Claresholm Eye Care, we’re here to support your child’s vision with a personalized treatment plan tailored to their needs. Book their next eye exam to learn how myopia management can make a lasting difference.

How Does Myopia Develop?

Myopia occurs when the eye is too long, or its interior wall is too steep, causing light to focus in front of the retina instead of on it, causing blurry distance vision. According to the Mayo Clinic, risk factors for myopia include genetics, prolonged close up work (such as long hours spent on your phone or tablet), and environmental conditions.

Controlling Myopia

Unfortunately, there is no cure for myopia. However, myopia can be controlled or corrected for using a variety of methods.

The most common form of myopia control comes in the form of prescription glasses or contacts. Your optometrist will test your eyes to determine your prescription, then recommend the best eyeglass lenses or contact lenses for you based on their findings. For added convenience, all glasses purchased from Claresholm Eye Care can be made in our in-house etching lab.

Laser eye surgery is a popular choice for people who crave freedom from glasses and contacts. It can restore vision for people who have myopia by reshaping the cornea to allow for better light refraction. Although Claresholm Eye Care doesn’t perform Laser Eye Surgery, we do offer laser eye surgery consultations.

These consultations allow us to evaluate your eyes and determine if laser eye surgery might be a good choice for you, discuss the risks and results, and help you make an informed decision. If you choose to undergo surgery, we will handle all your pre and post-operative care.

Low dose atropine drops (0.01%) temporarily prevent the eyes from changing focus, allowing them to relax and reducing strain on the focusing muscles. These prescription eye drops and have been shown to slow the progression of myopia in children.

Multifocal lenses are specialty eyeglass lenses and contact lenses that contain two or more prescriptions in each lens. Multifocal lenses, including bifocals and progressives, allow the eye to switch focus between near to far objects more quickly, allowing the eyes to experience clear vision at all distances using only one lens.
